The organization SERVICIO MADRILEÑO DE SALUD (SERMAS) is the administrative and management structure that integrates every public hospital and every public health service of the Madrid Regional Health System. SERMAS (beneficiary) is the legal representative of Hospital Universitario La Paz and delegates authority to Hospital’s General Director to manage research projects.
The University Hospital La Paz is a public center, dependent on the Community of Madrid, placed in the north zone of Madrid. The Hospital attends sanitarily to a population of reference top to 787.000 persons. La Paz relies on a team of almost 7.000 professionals. During the last years, La Paz has produced 190 scientific publications of original index-linked articles, of which 143 with high international recognized impact factor. The Maternity of the University Hospital La Paz attends to a major number of childbirths, reaching 11.128 in 2007. The Neonatology Unit is composed of 23 places in NICU, and 62 places for special care in hospitalized newborns and a follow up clinic for the very preterm infants. In 2007 650 newborn infants were hospitalized in the NICU and more than 150 of then were smoller than 1.500 g. It is national reference unit for different neonatal problems. All kind of neonatal medical and surgical procedures are available.
FIHULP NICU has an estimated number of about 50 Late onset Sepsis per year and about 3 cases of neonatal meningitis.
